We are 13,500 interns and residents across the country, and each day we work to:
  • Improve working conditions for housestaff across the country; and
  • Enhance the quality of care that we provide our patients.

Who We Are

The Committee of Interns and Residents is the largest housestaff union in the country, representing more than 13,500 residents in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York , New Mexico, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. CIR contracts improve housestaff salaries and working conditions as well as enhance the quality of patient care. CIR was founded in 1957.

What We Do

In addition to helping improve the quality of resident life through collective bargaining, CIR works on local and national levels to improve the quality of patient care.

CIR supports safe staffing levels, adequate funding of public hospitals, patient access to quality health care, reasonable work hours, support for GME funding, and safe working conditions.
