Tell the California Nurses Association: Silencing Nurses Voices Is Not a Victory

Over the past three years, more than 8,000 nurses and healthcare workers at Catholic Healthcare Partners—the largest hospital system in Ohio—worked with SEIU members and organizers to win an opportunity to form a union.

In February, they had a breakthrough when they won the opportunity to make the decision without interference or pressure of any kind.

But just days before they were set to vote to form a union, the California Nurses Association came to Ohio and disrupted the elections.

CNA accused SEIU of being “undemocratic” and claimed the ground rules the hospital workers had achieved were a “back-room” deal.

After CNA succeeded in derailing the elections, it actually told the Cincinnati Enquirer that stopping workers from voting to form a union was a “victory".

Full Petition Text:

Dear California Nurses Association:

How dare you call your campaign to silence healthcare workers a victory.

It's time for you to face the reality: your effort to stop workers from having a chance to vote to form a union is a huge setback for healthcare workers, for the patients they care for, and for anyone who believes that working people should have a strong, independent voice at work.

For three years, CHP workers fought for the freedom to form a union with SEIU without interference.

You weren't there at any point during that struggle. You only showed up when CHP caregivers were just days away from finally having a chance to vote.

We demand that CNA stop this and any other efforts to deny workers the chance to freely choose to form a union in a democratic election process.
