Janitors in San Diego clean some of the most expensive real estate and some of the most renowned research facilities in the country. Yet they continue to live in poverty, struggling to make ends meet, and often having to choose between putting food on the table and paying the rent. Right now more than 1,500 janitors in the San Diego-area alone are working hard and paying taxes, but are still shut out from access to healthcare. As part of a sub-contracted industry, owners of the buildings can play a decisive role in the outcome of negotiations with contractors. We are urging leaders in San Diego's business community to take a public position in support of improved standards for janitors, as well as asking them to urge their janitorial contractor to agree to a fair contract settlement, with decent wages and family health care for San Diego's janitors.
