Remind The Senate to Protect Patient Care

Last month, over 300 nurses and other caregivers went to Harrisburg to mandate that the Senate put an end to mandatory overtime. Some of the Senators we met with think that health care administrators should be able to use forced overtime as they see fit.

We know that mandatory overtime is not a sustainable solution to staffing problems. It endangers us and our patients.

We need to remind all of our senators that we need to protect patient care by banning mandatory overtime.

I am writing you to express my passionate concern that we end the practice of mandatory overtime for our caregivers in Pennsylvania.  I tell you this out of concern for my family, my friends, and my neighbors, all who depend on quality care, as well as the thousands of nurses who deserve respect for the hard work they do every day.

Every year, as many as 98,000 patients die because of medical errors.  While tired nurses are not the only reason for errors, fixing the problem of forced overtime will undoubtedly save lives by preventing many errors and also improve the conditions of both patients and nurses.  I am certain that you care just as much for your family as I do for mine, and would do whatever it takes to make sure they were safe and had the best possible care in the case of illness or an emergency.  You have the power to make sure that more families are safe by passing HB 834 and banning the practice of forced overtime.

Thank you for your attention to this extremely important issue.  On behalf of the thousands of caregivers in Pennsylvania, and the thousands more who depend on them every day, I am asking you to stand up for patient care and pass HB 834.  Your support to ban forced overtime will improve lives and will not go unnoticed.
