The short explanation of this alert was:
Over a month ago, 30 hard-working janitors cleaning Toyota Motor Sales' (TMS) national headquarters in Torrance, CA were laid off by their cleaning contractor, GCA Services. These lay offs represent nearly 40% of the janitorial work force cleaning the TMS headquarters and are considered massive even in this current climate of lay offs.

Across LA County businesses are struggling to maintain profits, but the industry standard for lay offs of such low-wage service workers, such as janitors, has been at most 10% of building maintenance staff.

In 2008, during commercial real estate janitors' statewide contract negotiations, California's leading businesses actively worked with the union and the contractors to guarantee a fair settlement for all parties. In the same manner, as the owner of the building and one of the GCA's major clients, Toyota can play a critical role in ensuring that this situation is resolved quickly, by engaging with the union as well as urging GCA Services to review the lay offs.
