The short explanation of this alert was:

The Michigan Department of Corrections has announced the closure of Standish Max, Hiawatha, Muskegon, and Camps Kitwen, Lehman, Cusino, Ottawa and White Lake.  Further, Alger Max will be lowered to a Level IV facility with double bunking, and line-up will be eliminated statewide.

These cuts may achieve some savings, but at what cost to the public?  Prisoners will be released in large numbers in a short amount of time. State employees will be laid off. Communities will be devastated.

Further, for those officers who still have a job...it will be a more dangerous one as they are left to handle the prisoners deemed not safe to release and doing so without the vital exchange of information from line-up.

While the state must find money, there must be a better way.  We as officers, community members, and citizens need to make our voices heard.
