The short explanation of this alert was:

Today, the Senate Committee considering HB1645 unanimously recommended passage of Senator Peter Burling’s amendment with bipartisan support. By making this decision, the Senate Committee refused to give in to the Local Government Center’s claims that the sky was falling and refuted the House ED&A leadership’s claims that Burling’s  amendment was not fiscally responsible. In fact, the Retirement System’s Executive Director Lisa Shapiro testified today that the fiscal difference between the Senate and House bills was “negligible”.

Rep. Anne-Marie Irwin, a key player on House Bill 1645, said last night she feared the Senate version wouldn't do enough to cut costs. "My basic ongoing worry is the whopping increase taxpayers are going to see in this very unsettled economy," said Irwin, a Peterborough Democrat.
