Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit SEIU Local 1877.The short explanation of this alert was: Members of the Stanford University Community: The 120 janitors, members of the Stanford family, who keep the University's campus clean, are currently on strike. They are joining hundreds of janitors that clean hi-tech giants in the Silicon Valley, including Yahoo, Cisco, and Oracle, that have traded their brooms for picket signs and are out on strike, standing up for decent wages and improved access to healthcare for their families - striking against illegal acts of intimidation and harassment by their employers. Janitors at Stanford, despite being subcontracted workers, take pride in their job, maintaining the beautiful campus and making sure that the dorms and living areas are comfortable for the thousands of students. On $347 a week, these hard working janitors and others across the Silicon Valley have found it increasingly difficult to raise a family in the Bay Area. They go without health care - having to wait two and a half years to get family health care, instead relying on home remedies and visits to the emergency room. They cannot afford a decent place to live. Many must live with multiple families in cramped apartments. Already several major hi-tech companies have committed to ensuring a fair wage for janitors cleaning their Silicon Valley facilities. Janitors are asking that Stanford do the same.
Please support the hard working janitors at Stanford looking to build a better future for their children. Send a letter to President John Hennessy, asking that he commit to ensuring that workers at Stanford University and Cisco, where Hennessy is a member of the Board of Directors, are provided a decent wage, access to family health care coverage and hopefully one day have an opportunity to be able to send their children to a prestigious university like Stanford.
